For Refugees in Syria - Spring 2018

This will be the 4th year of aid collections in Bearsted of clothes, shoes and bedding for refugees in Syria and Iraq and we would like your help again this Spring.  Last year Bearsted residents successfully sent over 160 banana boxes of clothes and shoe aid donations, plus over 50 bags of bedding, 9 wheelchairs, 9 walking frames, crutches and walking sticks and 2 buggies.

As you are aware from the media, there continues to be a massive need for aid and you can make a practical difference to the refugees and internally displaced people fleeing from IS and the Assad regime in Syria.

Practical Aid Appeal

From Sunday 1st April (Easter Day) until Friday 4th May in Bearsted, we will be collecting excellent condition second hand and new clothes for summer and winter, shoes, bedding, wheelchairs, and crutches and new hygiene care items.

For those of you that can knit, handmade blankets and knitted clothes in bright colours are also needed. The main collection point is Holy Cross Church.  Please note, we are not collecting aid in March.  Please see the Samara Aid flyer for more information on practical things that you can donate.

Holy Cross Church - Classic and New Way, St Mary’s Church Thurnham, Bearsted Methodist Church, St Peters Catholic Church, Connect Maidstone Church, all the North Downs churches along with Thurnham and Roseacre schools will be promoting this Appeal in addition to being in the Bearsted Parish Magazine.

We would appreciate volunteers for the sorting and boxing of donations days at Holy Cross Church on Saturday 21th April and Saturday 5th May 2018. We would also be grateful for volunteers willing to drive the hired vans containing the boxed aid to Samaras’ Worthing warehouse on 25th May or 26th May. To volunteer click here.

Jacqui Elliott and Emma Green will also be coordinating another Aid Collection at KCC’s Highways Depot in Aylesford (where Jacqui and Emma work) during May 2018.

Samara’s hospitals in Syria Appeal

During the Syrian war, over 2/3 of hospitals in Syria have been destroyed and 2/3 of its medical professionals have been lost.  People are dying from injuries and conditions that could be treated.

Samara is running and opening emergency hospitals and ‘Meditainers’ to serve areas where there is no healthcare provision and where need is greatest. Samara has partnered with Dr A, Director of Relief and Medical Projects and his medical teams to offer hope and life to the people of Syria living in a war zone.  Samara is supporting Emmanuel and Al Hayat emergency hospitals in Aleppo, and has plans for 3 smaller hospitals called the Trinity Hospitals, in the Deir Ez-Zor area of Syria, using many Meditainers.

The first of Samara’s Trinity hospitals is called ‘Al Rahmie Hospital’ meaning "mercy", and opened in February 2018.  This hospital is open to all civilians in this recently liberated area, and provides life-saving surgery from it’s Meditainer units as well as other essential medical services.  The importance of this new hospital has been recognised by WHO (World Health Organisation), who have given additional medical equipment and supplies.  In addition, to strengthen the services of this new hospital, a building has been provided by the Ministry of Religion in Syria and support has been received from Syrian Arab Red Crescent.

Financial donations towards the established and new hospitals would be much appreciated.

Please donate to save lives in Syria.

About Samaras Aid Appeal

Around Christmas 2013, Samara, a Christian mum from Brighton saw reports of refugee children in snow covered camps in Iraq wearing flip flops and summer clothes in the snow These were the clothes they had been wearing when they fled their homes from IS and they had nothing else.  Samara was moved to tears by this and set up Samaras Aid appeal in October 2014 with all the logistics it entails using aid partners in Syria and Iraq to get practical aid from the UK to the refugees that really need it.

Samaras approach is for us to give what we can; sharing good clothes, shoes, money and other essentials that we have with those that have nothing.

Since 2014, Samara has now sent 94 shipping containers of aid from the UK to Iraq and Syria, clothing over 350,000 displaced people and refugees.

During 2017, aid was delivered to the people of Aleppo, Damascus, Homs and Idblib and also to areas of Iraq including Duhuk, Irbil, Kirkuk, Karbala and Bagdad.  In December 2017, aid was delivered to Deir Ez-zor in Syria for the first time. This is an area of Syria that until very recently has suffered 3 years of occupation by IS, with all the brutal governance this brought, and is still a very dangerous place to distribute aid.

The most important thing that needs to be rebuilt is hope and humanity.  Samara went to Syria for the first time during Easter 2017 and a second visit in October 2017. These were very emotional visits, but gave Samara the chance to meet the people helped by the aid appeal and those involved with its distribution.

Samara and the refugees in Iraq and Syria are very grateful for all the help Bearsted and surrounding area residents have already given to this appeal over the last 3 years and thank you for your continuing support, prayers and practical help.
